Well sis it is important to understand your changing language. For example, the words you may use around me and dad is different than the words you may use around your friends or gymnastics coaches. Knowing the right words to say and when is a valuable skill, particularly later in life. You wouldn’t want to anger your boss at a job, or upset one of your friends. Either case ends up wit some one being hurt. Thats why you need to learn when to hold your tongue.

It is important to understand and be aware of your own use of language in the work place. As an employer, I demand respect that I have earned. Sure we live in a free nation; however, that won’t protect you from the consequences of your words. I’ll let you off the hook this time, but I don’t want to hear any sass out of you, or you will be fired!

Interesting how these both sound so different, but can tell how it is written by the same person.
Well put! I want to add to your conversation with your sister. You implied it is important to “hold the tongue” on occasion. I agree. I also think that it is always possible to re-word/re-route language to convey what one would normally hold back. It’s about being aware of the environment, which will give a person insights as to appropriate vocabulary. If there is something someone wants to say, I think it is important for them to say it no matter what the subject. That is the only way for people to learn. It’s about saying it well and with respect. A person may definitely need to “hold there tongue” while he or she thinks through how to appropriately convey his or her thoughts and ideas.
